Director of Coaching - Tim Lucas
Tim brings a rich history of experience across a variety of levels and programs, and joins us directly from West Chester United Soccer Club and Penn Fusion in the northeast. Tim is a USSF A licensed coach who has taken seven teams to top 25 national rankings including a number 1 ranked team in 2004. In addition, Tim coached 3 NSCAA high school All Americans, served as a state coach with Virginia ODP, and trained Pre-Academy teams with DC United. At other levels, Tim has coached PDL, DC United Super Y and at the college level with both Marymount University and SJU.
Tim is a trained educator, with a Masters Degree in education. He has carried that over to his soccer passion, and is an instructor for USSF licensing.
Director of Player Development and Recreation - Gordon Bengtson
Gordon joins the JYSC family from Charlotte, NC where he worked for the Carolina Rapids-an MLS affiliated club. Gordon is a USSF B licensed coach who served as the Rapids Youth Academy Associate Director, USSDA Assistant and coached several of their most competitive teams.
Gordon will be overseeing the JYSC Recreational program as well as working with some of FURY teams. As a former scholarship player in the ACC and having spent time overseas in S.S.C Napoli’s academy in Italy as a youth, Gordon is well versed in the developmental path of a player.
Additionally, Gordon still holds several High School scoring records (Goals in a game: 8 – Goals in a season: 62 – Goals in a career 153) He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication with a minor in Sports Marketing from Virginia Tech.
Developmental Director - Mike Johnson
Mike joined JYSC in 2012 although as a fourteen year old player, Mike helped start JYSC in 1975. He has over 35 years experience in all levels of soccer as a player, coach, director and administrator. From 2004-2011, Mike was Head Coach of Men’s Soccer at Jacksonville University. From 1998-2003, he was Head Coach for Women’s Soccer at Jacksonville University. From 1985-1990, Mike was Director of Coaching for Jacksonville Jaguars. He played professional soccer for Tulsa Tornado USL and was captain and MVP of the Jacksonville University NCAA Div.1 team. Mike is the only coach in Atlantic Sun History to take a Women’s and Men’s team to NCAA College Cup and be named ’Coach of the Year’ in both genders. Mike has coached six Florida State Cup Final-Four teams, including one winner.
Developmental Director - John Mclelland
John has acquired an extensive range of experience during his eighteen years coaching around the world, and as a player. As a youngster, John played for his boyhood hero's Rangers FC, and represented Scotland at the U15 level. After four years playing in Rangers FC youth ranks, John signed his Professional School form with Heart of Midlothian, before turning full time Professional with Kilmarnock FC.
After two years with Kilmarnock FC, and a severe knee injury, John returned as a player in the Icelandic league with Selfoss FC. After several seasons with the Icelandic club, John had a brief spell in America before heading to New Zealand to become player coach of Caversham AFC (Winning the Southern Premiere League) and Regional Development Officer for New Zealand, Otago Region.
During his time with Kilmarnock FC (as with all young Professionals in Scotland) John was put through several SFA coaching Licenses. In addition, John also has his NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma, NSCAA Level 6 Diploma, and the NSCAA National Diploma.
Since returning to the States, John has worked with Adidas Coerver and Cobb FC, In Atlanta, and since 2006 John has been part of the Technical staff at JYSC. During his time with JYSC John's players have won several leagues and tournaments while developing into some of the cities best young players.
